Finally

Four-years-University life is coming to an end very soon

Final Year Project (FYP) turned out to be more grueling than I had imagined

My passion for research have been totally exterminated

I guess research is just not for me

Undeniably, I have learnt many things from FYP

especially towards the end, not only about chemistry, but also about life and myself

One more assignment and exam and will be

Moving on into a new chapter of life soon

I hope it will be an exciting one!

Happy Chinese New Year!
I guess it's the last day to say that until the next year..

The New Year was spent in Penang, which is great!
It will be even greater if we had all four of us celebrating it together..
too bad it was only three, and it will only be three from now onwards..
No reunion dinner, the two bottles of wines that were supposed to be drank are still there, unopened..

The last time I had CNY coinciding with mid sem break was in my Year 1..
Time flies, I am in my final year already..
And it has been almost four months already..
I hope he is having a good life there, he never had when he was here

now, i wish i could end my fyp soon..
it's so tiring..
today i had some inspiration:

wow..

looks like it's been a while since i last posted

well, life's been busy with failed reactions

hopefully everything will be better soon!

since i hv stolen some chemical from a research institute,

i believe there is no reason it wouldn't work!

haha..

it's quite happening this week in the techno world

a whole new line of iMac launched on wednesday

Brand new people-say-better-OS -- Windows 7, launched on Thursday

Nokia is suing Apple iPhone for violation 10 of Nokia's wireless technology patents on Friday

The upcoming browser - Google Chrome has released mac version on Saturday

The new iMac comes in 21.5" and 27"

the 27" can also serve as an external display

the 21.5" has 1920 x 1080 pixels while the 27" has 2560 x 1440

which means both are HD screen and it's also 16:9 wide screen display!

Apple reckons that cables r devils and hence has gotten rid of all cables except for the power cord... hehe.. wonder when they will get rid of it..

both keyboard and mouse r bluetooth enabled

The new mouse is known as "magic mouse"

it uses the same multitouch technology as in the iphones

which means it supports the gesture like swipe, scroll etc

if u hv used MB or MBP or iphone or ipod touch before, u would hv known how to use it!

also, for the same specs of iMac now and b4, it's cheaper by approx SGD 400!!

luckily i nv buy that time..!

P/S I: This was posted using Google Chrome in a Mac, pretty snappy so far

P/S II:

My MacBook's press pad wasn't behaving recently

so I sent for a full body check up since the applecare protection plan (APP) expiring soon

and guess what..

after 5 days, when i went back to collect my laptop

i noticed not only the press pad is new, the touch pad, the keyboard, the top case the fan are all new too!!

Kudos, apple! love ya~

now, my laptop is as good as new

when i bought my laptop 3 years ago, it was:

512 MB RAM, 60 GB HDD, 2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo

now:

2 GB RAM, 320 GB HDD, 2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo

It used only 22 seconds to boot up, now, age has reared its fugly head

It takes 9 seconds to shut down and 46 seconds to boot up

still as snappy as before though..

It's been ages since I last blogged..

In case you wonder what had happened to me..

I am just occupied by my Final Year Project a.k.a. FYP

FYP simply sucks

It takes up too much time and effort

It's just so taxing..

In addition to that, lectures still need to be attended

projects to be done

tests to be taken

I wish the earth would spin slower

or I could travel faster

or the thing could just end soon

A trip to Sukaraya for dinner is the first event I had? Haha

A japanese cuisine.. No pictures here but the food really not bad..

i think i hv had a severe short term memory disorder kind of disease these days..
most probably due to the dangerous, hazardous, poisonous, whatever-u-call-it chemicals in my new labs
been forgetting things almost instantaneously..

for example:
i told my mum something when i reached home
after i went into my room and put down my things, i walked out n told my mum again..
my mum reminded me that i juz told her..
kns..
dementia at such an age?
not only this..

it happened to me ytd when i showed M a picture then i met up with another then when i came back i showed M again the same thing!
what's happening to me!!!!
can someone tell me plz?

P/S: bought a gingko extract that burnt a hole in my pocket n caused a blister on my ass, hope it works!

i got my external hard disk (EDD) and leopard..

Of course, after some persuasion and advice from friends..

the angel wins..

I hv decided not to go for a new mac and download my copy of leopard instead..

Think nx yr i will definitely buy.. hopefully better specs and free gifts

I couldn't wait longer for ppl to give me the EDD as present..

haha.. cos I hv downloaded leopard n i nid EDD urgently for backup

The EDD has also be of better quality and longer waranty

and it doesn't come cheap..

hence, i decided to get it myself...

After that only i know that cheap way of getting EDD is that not to buy the normal EDD on the shelves..

get separate internal hard disk & a casing then assemble urself..

much cheaper that way..

lastly, leopard is really so much cooler than tiger!

no 1. i got extra cash

no 2. i want the transition OS - leopard for my macbook

then sept i can get upgrade to snow leopard the new OS

no 3. this macbook's applecare warranty expires on end of oct

so shud anything happens then bye bye

no 4. it's got a free ipod touch!

no 5. i mightn't be eligible for student discount and educational promotion nx yr

no 6. it's really cool

no 7. i like it

no 8. i love it

no X. IT IS MAC!!!

Reasons for not buying: (Angel)

no 1. exchange rate is so damn high S$1=RM2.46

(i lose abt RM 414 if i buy in sg, but w/o itouch in msia)

今天做了一个脸书里的星座分析，觉得还满准的，于此分享

蓝色－中！认同

不久前，我在旅程中买了一件有八个口袋的裤子

今早便是穿着它东奔西跑了一个早上

回到家时，发现钥匙并不在平常的口袋中！

顿时慌了

便骑着摩多车沿着原路西奔东跑回去

问了全部我去过的地方的人

也没有

正拖着沮丧的心情回家时

忽然！钥匙出现了！

在最下面的口袋里！

这时，头神忽然归位！

想起了，原来本来最上面的口袋里的东西容易掉出来

又因为骑摩多车，为了安全起见

特地放入有拉链的最下面口袋

由于最下面口袋很深

之前掏口袋时，摸不到

因此，浪费了一个早上！

好一个“无头神”！

结论：不要买太多口袋的裤子

wow..! last post was 2 months ago!!

This blog has been long deserted..

juz dont hv the mood to keep writing blog posts..

well, in the past 2 months i was bz preparing for exams, playing chibi online until 2.5 weeks ago

3 items in my wishlist in previous post, achieved 2 of them..

juz came back frm a 2-week-long trip..

there were some minor hiccups and abrasion..

but i guess it's normal..

thank you guys for making the trip a fun-filled one..

Spent most time in Penang (7), then Alor Setar (1), KL (1), Genting (1), Klang (0.5), KL (1)

I think Penang food is nice to Penangites but the same might not apply to others..

Had seafood and durian almost every alternate days in Penang.. gosh..

It was good though..

Also went to firefly expedition somewhere in "Kolor" [KT's hometown] then AutoCity Carnival

Also persuaded KT to get 5800 together with WG n me.. wakaka..

Rented:

a car (New Bob Car Centre, RM107.40/day, Kancil Manual);

a room (Tunes Hotel, ~RM30/pax/day + 24 hrs aircond RM21)

Credit cards are required to do bookings, (i m asking my mum to make one and sup for me.. wakaka)

after being driver for a couple of days, finally, i m able to link broken pieces of Penang map in my brain.. lol..

Alor Setar is more like a town than a city [Kononnya, Bandaraya, lol]

Paddy fields are everywhere, unbounded spans of green and also a superb seaside

peaceful, beautiful..

Visit Bukit Keriang, a crystal elephant island hill, unique but a bit dirty, many rubbish.. haha..

Then I was also met with SY's extremely frenly father..

His opening speech was alwaz "Hello! How are you!", nice home he has btw..

In KL, we arrived at rich-man-dotter's home..

well, dont be too surprise if u c the son's room is much tidier than the dotter's.. lol!!

Had some Bak Kut Teh there, honestly speaking, it's the best throughout the trip.. haha..

The mother is extremely lack of confidence on her dotter's driving skill.. =)

Then genting trip, expensive as usual, but the blur waiter/cashier forgot to charge me my mocha which costs abt RM13++, haha.. free drink..

after the usual stuff (theme park), we went for a movie (Blood, sucks) then casino (bloodsucker)..

Suddenly realised someone turns moody very quickly ever since we were in genting..

Klang's Bak Kut Teh was tried, the seafood teh is pretty special..

but it has lost the taste of bak kut teh already..

there is a special rojak here (called Pasembur in Penang), not bad though..

then we went jusco in Klang town centre...

Again, somebody black mouth black face whole day.. haha..

Back in KL, rich-mummy bought us some bak kwa..

rich-daddy purposely came home n fetched us to pudu bus terminal..

rich-dotter ended the trip with illness.. haha..

highly probable passed frm me, i was sick the whole trip.. lol..

Throughout the whole trip, we discovered that there are many jusco and old town white coffee

iMac with mac OS 10.6 aka Snow Leopard
Holiday trip (local)

Finally decided on nokia 5800
after comparing among 5800, iPhone and Samsung Omnia
Offering similar features at 50% the price of the latter two..
Nokia 1st touch screen phone..
pretty nice..

Snow Leopard is scheduled to be released in June (rumour)
some said September..
Its improvement from Leopard would be as great as Tiger to Leopard
but rather they focus on better performance and stability than Leopard
not many new features added but the touch ups are pretty neat..
I guess its Steve Job's response to Windows 7
but who cares about windows anywayz..
haha..
i m definitely getting my hands on it once it's released

well well well..
holiday soon again..
holiday plans.. hehe..
this time round, i plan to tour malaysia from north to south or south to north.. lol
tentative destinations: penang, alor setar, KL, Malacca, Spore(?) haha..
will c how, now focus on exam more important..

后来认识了很多新国朋友，才渐渐有了家的感觉
大学就如此糊里糊涂地开始了

一年前（2007）
不晓得我变笨了，还是大学生厉害
我成绩方面变得越来越平凡了
爸爸终于到退休年龄了，所以就领了退休金
一大半拿去还给人了
剩下的平分给我、妈妈和弟弟
他自己并没有留下
我的份已足够让我念四年书了
我知道我们从此没有债务了
我们自由了！

可是，为什么？
为什么又要让妈妈患上癌症？
为什么数年前发现时，又要让医生误诊？
为什么医生说是良性的，切除后又会变成恶性？
马上又要被开刀？
刚发现是恶性时，我慌了，我哭了
终于懂了什么是哭、什么是担心的哭、什么是害怕的哭
每次开车来回医院时总是哭
看见医生报告写着“60% of 5 years disease free survival rate" 的字眼
我不懂要怎么反应了
妈妈总是说她准备好随时可以走了
可是我还没有啊
她怎么从没问我准备好让她离开了吗？
妈妈的老板也因此想尽办法逼她走
妈妈失业了
后来是又找到了工

今年（2008）
但因为化疗、电疗常常得请无薪假
化疗，使妈妈的头发一根一根地脱落了
所幸的是，妈妈始终很乐观，她只哭过一次
现在她在马六甲进行电疗一个月多
家里少了收入

新年前，家里冰橱碰巧坏了
因为家里的钱所剩无几
我就用我的钱买了
本来新年也不打算返槟
忽然间，姑姑公公可能患上了血癌
希望我们可以回去，毕竟他年事已高
回去，当然也得用我这儿的钱

新年过了
红包总算有拿一些回来
预算只能刚刚好应付学期的钱
没能剩下很多了，已是极限了

碰巧三月份又特别多人生日
节目特别多，花了不少钱
手头更为拮据了
很多时候，我都两餐并作一餐吃，常常推说不饿
一来，没钱了；二来，真的不是很饿；三来，可以减肥

今天，我又去打麻将了
因为他们三缺一，却又兴致勃勃
其次，也希望我手气好，可以赢得免费晚餐，而且我也想玩

可是不懂为什么，“十赌九输”这话偏偏今天灵验
只糊了一小把，全场都在派钱
偏偏给我要“平糊”了又送来一朵花
偏偏要“七双子”了最后给人赢去（自摸平糊和七双子可以赢超多钱的）
成了全场超级大输家

我脸黑不是因为赌品不好，还是不甘愿输
我只恨我自己为何当时没有坚持不去
现下可好，手头更紧了，我只能说，这是自找的
输了，我还是会赔钱，我不需要同情，我不需要施舍
请留点最后的尊严给我，谢谢

最后，我只想问，神啊
我究竟做错了些什么？为什么要给我这种“磨练”？
明明已经好转的状况，最后一分钟又来个突发状况？
看到别人幸福的孩子，我会不甘心，我会心里不平衡
双亲奔波劳碌大半生，
最后得到的是什么？
年老和疾病吗？
我以后并不要求成为最有钱的人
我只希望成为一个平凡的人
有个平凡的家庭、过着平凡的日子
如果以后我的孩子也要经历这种“磨练”
那就到我为止好了

但是不可能的了，希望我可以修读到博士

昨天是 Good Friday
也是新国公假

大清早便与雪和裕前往观音亭参神
好久没拜拜了

最后，午餐也没位子坐

原来新加坡还是有好吃的

逛着逛着

价格还算不贵
考虑良久后就买了
时候也不早了，得回去准备另一个活动


昨晚是友人的廿一岁生日派队
这时宝贝当然也派得上用场了
现在我没有照片

当晚好热闹

My life is boring!!!!

only 4 big bottles..

left most, conc sulfuric acid dripping into formic acid to generate carbon monoxide then passed to rightmost bottle with sodium hydroxide to neutralize any formic acid vapor that might vaporize from 1st bottle and purified CO is directed into my tetraoctylammonium bromide-coated-photolyzed-palladium nanoparticles.

Unfortunately, with all this impressive setup and evrything..

My whole day effort wasted..

No CO is adsorbed onto my Pd NP..

最近生活都好忙。。

但我若放了感情却很不容易收回。。

更莫说短时间内“跳槽”。。

可是最近好像对某人有了“有所期待”的感觉。。

可是还是有人想知道当初的她是谁。。

我不是“饥渴”。。

Today's first lab session was horrible..!!

basically we don't need to go anything..

All the Mass specs and NMR spectra are printed out for us..

All the peaks are interpreted for us..

Just reproduce what the TA said..

Great..

Great for insulting our intelligence..

and to learn something by doing nothing..

My experiment failed again..

gonna do it in organic solvent for Fischer reaction 2mr..

Hope it works this time..

Cos my gold kept crashing out in aqueous medium..

I shud do something to keep myself awake during 4-5pm..

dunno y i alwaz feel very drowsy during that time slot in lecture evrytime..

But i m very awake after 5pm amazingly..

By the way, I m still at lab now at this hour... great...

P/S:

that funny TA mentioned above is a PRC (chinese frm china). He kept pronouncing "procedure" as "prositute". And evryone heard it as "prostitute".. All people giggled all the way thru' started from me.. lolz... terrible..

good news is that..

i found out that my bottleneck is not my skills...

but rather, it's the chemicals..

So i juz change method..

The life of being a UROPS (research) student and student is tough...

UROPS by itself is fun..
I alwaz said that to all my frenz..
It's like experiment without lab manual and senior reports..
Full of uncertainties...

U get to think for urself and design ur own reactions..
U r very clear of what u r doing in UROPS..
Unlike normal lab session whr u juz follow evrything in lab manual..
without much understanding.. at least that's what i usually do.. lolz..

U r free to use all dangerous and hazardous chemicals and instruments in the lab..
instruments like Infra-Red spectroscopy, UV-vis sepctroscopy, NMR machine etc etc..
chemicals like aqua regia, conc acids, liquid nitrogen etc etc...
These are the big no no in normal labs, even at uni level...

minor explosions are quite common in lab..
evrything is done in fume hood..
I learn how to see molecules in molecular language (signals, chemical shifts)..
Then from there we can translate it into what the molecules look like in text books..

My research project is on surface functionalization of nanoparticles...
basically it's to functionalize the surfactants attached onto the nanoparticles..
to make useful things.. or attached to a bio-molecules..
and then carry into human cell for some intracellular reactions..

but said is alwaz easier than done..
i m running out of idea as to how to functionalize my NP.. ~bottleneck
the outcome of lab results does not alwaz go in accordance with the theory..
U predict this and that, it gives u something else..

So chemical reaction looks so simple..
but it can be very hard to control, for instance, thionyl chloride (SOCl2)
No point explaining too many technical stuff here..
But juz to let u all know what i m doing now..

Life is so busy until i dont hv much time now..
evryday got morning lecture 8-10, then either 2-4pm or 4-6pm..
then rest of the time spend in lab...
at night, either think of what to do in the next day's lab or study...

The cycle repeats...

This does not mean i don't like research anymore..
I do.. but it's simply too exhausting hving to go lab n go lectures evryday..
after squeezing dry ur brain then go lecture n fill up with all new knowledge isn't fun..
I feel physically and mentally tired evry day... 8am-6pm..

To make things worse..
i do not hv the sufficient knowledge on the lab techniques and knowledge on chemistry..
picking up a lot along the way though...
so sometimes it's very discouraging...

This is only the end of week 2..
In NUS, things start to get out of hand in week 5 & 6 ONWARDS...
Hope i can survive then.. lolz..
13 more weeks until my final exam again..

juz found out that PC with SSE3 can also run Mac OS..
Check out PearPC, an emulator in windows to run Mac..
people tell me that running being able to run Full-Fledged Mac on PC makes an ultimate computer.

No. 2,
the so-called Mac on PC is actually running a Mac emulator in PC instead of running it natively. On the other hand, bootcamp runs PC natively on Mac. In fact, Mac is a better machine of running PC. On top of that, u run Mac not a FULL-FLEDGED Mac..

No. 3,
we need bootcamp juz bcos some programs out there are not compatible with Mac, for instance, AutoCAD etc. Certainly, we have our very own design programs but due to the Windows counterpart unable to catch up with us in terms of technology, we hv to give way by sacrificing some HDD and RAM to run windows on our Mac.

No. 4,
prior to bootcamp(free), there were a lot of parallel programs in the market to help alleviate this problem, parallel, VMWare Fusion etc to run in-Mac Windows. Of course, this not only help in assignment submission to dumb lecturers who don't appreciate Mac and programs like AutoCAD, but also help in transition to Mac for newbie in Mac.

Having said that, i hope that i don't sound rude. Parallels and dualboot programs are for stingy people who want to play games but poor,SGD 70 vs RM 6, and chickens who want to try other machine (Mac) while still clinging onto the old ones (Windows).

This is as good as two-timing. Some jerks are like that, change heart when they c other pretty gals around and want both, u will get urself burnt in the end.

A lot of cool features in Mac are subtle. But the aggregation of all these subtle effects makes it cool. It doesn't have to be big! The same applies to human beings. The sweetest of all are those subtle, caring personalities of a person. S/He doesn't hv to be extremely pretty with big b**bs, nice A*s or hunks with six packs and gigantic c*ck!

P/S: this is juz so not my style of writing.. Hahahaha...

第三天。。
休息天。。
屠妖节。。
可怜我的姐妹们，不晓得被屠到怎样了。。
哈哈哈。。

今天做了很多东西。。就是没读书。。
－吃早餐、收拾store room、捉老鼠、血拼CD、看戏等等。。

老虎捉老鼠计划失败。。
被骂了一顿。。
哈哈哈。。
我天生一副“观音姐姐”的好心肠，
怎对可怜的小老鼠下得了杀手？

妈妈翻回以前的宝箱。。
让我看见了她和爸爸在我的年龄时的旧相片。。。
他们还当真是帅哥美女配。。
当年老爸的帅气竟然不下于我！！
看来我的优良血统是遗传的。。
哈哈哈。。
人老了当然另当别论。。
以前永远都跟我说她只有28岁的妈妈也认老了。。
唉。。

Holiday - day 1~2 [Organic Day]

Been doing revision since Tuesday, yesterday la, hahaha...
Backache..
Butt stuck to chair whole day...

Organic is really tough...
so much deeper than i could ever imagine..
mind you, it's only level 2...
What will happen in level 3?

Nonetheless, i still enjoy organic..
Organic seems to be the only branch of chemistry that i hv put in so much effort..
I go tuition when Mrs Sim about to start org..
I hv study group for organic..

Thank u Martin Lear, my lecturer..
although u r a bit anyhow, i m touched by ur passion for organic chemistry..

fortunately i m back to my comfy room with my queen size bed...
haha.. Otherwise..
my fragile backbone will be fragmented by the stupid bed in hall..

Finally got back my refund for the WAT programme..
i was rejected cos the vacancies to 2 destination i chose, YellowStone & Cedar Point, were all filled up..
Mayb next time i try again..

Time to switch to Mac..
Mac also has "boot camp" which allows u to boot windows in ur mac also..
for those who scare mac will b user unfriendly..
But u wont nid it once u switch to Mac..

Lecturer No 1 [from china]
can't pronounce any words in english properly..
can't differentiate between "l" and "n"..
alwaz confuse people "line" with "nine", "dynamic" with dilemic"

Lecturer No 2 [from pluto]
Sounds like cartoon character..
Read off slides directly, which even kindergarden kiddos can do..
too "unique" sense of humour...

Lecturer No 3 [frm africa]
Teach irrelevant things to subject..
like to show very advanced stuff then say no nid to know so detail..
shoot students till very cham...

cant understand y NUS brings in this kind of lecturers...
pls lah..
get someone who at least can speak proper english..!!

终于松了一口气。。。
从上个拜二开始，就一直不停地赶工。。
好忙的一个星期。。
终于结束了。。
好累。。

5 more weeks to exam..
for those who r having exam or going to have exam..

time to do some revision so that i can catch up b4 final exam..
if not i m gonna fail the exam..

the highly stressed week has passed..
time to settle at ground state a bit..
can do stupid things again..

Anyway, my weekend wasnt entirely on projects only..
I went for a buffet dinner..
it's a raya celebration buffet dinner..
funny lo..
they played games and needed ppl to go up stage 1..
i was picked, along with 7 other ppl..
so suay..
go "berjoget" with them..
Then i also played the quiz which anyone who participate will get all correct ans 1..
he said u can change ans if ur ans is wrong..
funny malay guy..
it's was fun fun fun...!!

I also went for a piano ensemble concert called "potpourri"..
Also involve in a drama called "puppet"

That's y my week was so packed..!!

This sem i got to know a lot of new frenz..
I m glad abt it..
This new gang of frenz are quite hardworking 1
but they r funny though, not nerdy type.. from what i can c...

a national park in US..

I m quite surprised actually when my father said ok without 2nd thought..
ahaha..
think he thinks i can cover cost..
but no guarantee yet..

现况

现在。。
我感到好累好累。。
从8点上课到6点。。
原本还有课外活动。。
但我决定不去了。。
就拖着疲惫的步伐迈向我的房间前进。。
从School of Business走回我的宿舍。。
距离是来回钟灵前门到Form 6 Block的1.5圈。。

再过三天就刚好是半个学期了。。
这学期不如意的事很多。。
从搬进宿舍第一天开始到最近。。
最近的火气也越来越大。。
惹毛我的人。。哈哈！！
或许我该说。。
我比较会为自己争取自己应有的福利／东西。。
这学期我仿佛长大了许多。。

前两个文章提到的她。。
或许事发前就已经心情不爽的缘故。。
亦或者我小气、看不开。。
每当我看到她是总是咽不下这口气。。
我不知道我会不爽多久。。
我就是不爽！
小气就小气！

这学期我参了戏剧。。
国大华剧和钟中戏剧所教的东西都差不多。。
看来钟中戏剧也还蛮专业的。。
或者该说，戏剧在哪儿都是一样的。。
可是我在这却找不到那时的感觉。。

这学期虽然只念5个科目。。
但功课很重。。
每天都在学校上课10小时。。
除了拜四（14小时）、拜三（0小时）
每一天除了忙之外就是不明白。。
教授教的都不明白。。
有写不完的实验报告。。
有读不完的书。。

从小学时的石蕊试纸到现在的Frontier Molecular Orbital Theory(FMO), Reaction mechanism等等。。
我确定我还是喜欢化学。。
从酸红碱蓝但万物的根本化学原理。。
很好玩，很有兴趣。。
但。。
以后我可以做些什么？

人。。
始终要面对的是人。。
不是化学物品、不是书。。
做人很难。。
男人、女人、好人、坏人都很难。。
玩游戏错了可以重玩。。
做人做错了事就无法“重新载入”。。

21岁了。。
活了30％的人生（平均寿命70岁）。。
做了些什么。。
还有什么是要等着我去做的？
有时真的很想知道10年后的我会是怎样的。。
真希望有个小叮当在我的身边。。
